VILLA IMPROVING

After a difficult start to the season, Aston Villa’s form has been slowly improving and it has been reflected in the table. They are 11th in the table after taking 14 points from the opening 11 matches. Villa used to spend big during the days of Martin O’Neill, but they have been very prudent in the last few transfer windows. This is expected to be the case in the upcoming January transfer window as well according to manager Paul Lambert. The team managed to win their first match in five during the weekend against Cardiff.

The 2-0 win lifts the pressure on Lambert, who has changed the team a lot since taking over almost 2 years ago. Christian Benteke started the season in flying fashion, but he has gone off the boil in recent weeks. Lambert’s main work will be to get Benteke scoring goals once again. After a difficult first half against Cardiff at Villa Park, Villa scored two goals in the second half to seal three points. This was the first win since the famous 3-2 win over Manchester city in September.

Lambert has said that they will not be looking for big-name signings, but it will be bargain deals that will be the talk of the town.

“Randy has been great and (chief executive) Paul Faulkner has been great but we won’t be able to do what you would call a massive signing. We won’t be able to go out and buy the big type of players. We have to look at the market, the young lads. We give them an opportunity and hopefully they take it. If you look at the side we put out against Cardiff you’ll see we have lots of injuries at the moment, nearly half a team out,” said Lambert after the Cardiff match.
